About Nelly

Nelly-Rubio

Currently residing in South Florida, Melissa ‘MoonChild’ Stokes is a Singer/ Songwriter with sultry, vocals who offers regeneration and love through music. Her voice is thick and soothing like Sade with an abstract tone and syncopation reminiscent of Billie Holiday.  She seamlessly writes and sings to everything from elegant Latin ballads to driving Hip Hop tracks to Smooth Jazz and R&B to Electronic Dance. Her musical choices are influenced by her multicultural upbringing, California-native raised in Africa and the Middle East.  Having performed for thousands of people, MoonChild has opened for Smokey Robinson, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., and been a repeat featured artist in Willie Stewart’s (of Third World) award-winning Rhythms of Africa presentation.

From an early age, MoonChild has written and published award-winning poetry.  She’s always loved the healing effects of intimate expression but was too shy to sing.  Born to a Nicaraguan mother who sang for popular radio stations in her native country, MoonChild remembers her childhood home full of music and parties for all ages, with dancing at all hours of the day to the sounds of Hector LaVoe, Julio Iglesias and The Sugar Hill Gang.  She also absorbed the rich tapestry of music and dance from the world around her:  the orchestra of drums deep in the forest throughout the nights in Liberia, and the heart-felt, melodious prayers sung five times a day from the several mosques surrounding her homes in Morocco and Bahrain.  After completing two years of premedical studies and dance at the University of California, San Diego, MoonChild relocated to South Florida where she found her voice.  Soon after approaching working bands, MoonChild was in demand for live performances. Her vocalist career was born.

MoonChild’s many musical influences include Celia Cruz, Prince, Armando Manzanero and Sadé.  She performs at Jazz Festivals, charity events, health fairs, live music lounges and many other venues including the Save the Twinz: Live Pink! Women Who Jam Concert Series.  Eclectic Collection I is her self-written jazzy/R&B debut album produced by Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer George ‘Chocolate’ Perry, featuring songs to soothe the broken heart, release the angry heart and encourage a hopeful, happy heart.  She is currently working on a new album in addition to her first stage production.
